19 August (Tuesday)

  • 250 work establishments belong to the Gdańsk MKS. The whole Coast is on strike.
  • Representatives of 17 striking enterprises in the Tricity start independent talks with Pyka’s Commission.

From an MKS statement:

We are awaiting the arrival of central authorities. [...] On behalf of the crews that we represent we state that we want to return to work as soon as possible, but as fully-fledged citizens, as genuine co-managers of work establishments.

Lech Wałęsa (the leader of the protest):

During the MKS meetings in the BHP (Work Hygiene and Safety) hall I immediately realised that people were too emotional and too excited to hold any serious discussion and to make a binding decision. That was like a ritual: as the door opened, I would walk down the aisle towards the table on a small rostrum, then I would make a quick about-face towards the audience and keep silent for a while; then I would say that I declare the MKS meeting open and suggest that we sing the national anthem. The people would rise and sing the anthem in unison. Literally - people who ten minutes earlier prepared strongly-worded speeches on the „we will whip them” note, now unprotestingly accepted decisions taken after discussions in small groups.

Maria Myślak (present in the Shipyard at that time):

One can hardly find the right words to describe the atmosphere that reined in the Shipyard on that day: seriousness, awareness of something important taking place, something irreversible and great, something in which all those gathered in the Shipyard participate and for which they are responsible… When an evening prayer was announced at 5 or 6 p.m., all turned up at the gate and all prayed: the prayer became an act of belief in the rightness of the strike.[…].The prayer involved believers and nonbelievers alike, that was the voice and the song of those fighting and believing in the rightness of the cause: inside there were the striking workers, delegates of all enterprises represented in the MKS, journalists from all over Europe, well-wishers (like myself), outside - the Tricity residents, holiday makers and tourists visiting the Coast.
