Workers’ delegations negotiating with Deputy Prime Minister Pyka sever talks and declare loyalty to the Gdańsk MKS grouping 304 work establishments.
Over 30 work establishments already belong to the Szczecin MKS.
The Security Service arrests members and associates of KOR and other opposition groupings.
A ruthless propaganda campaign against the strikers is under way in official press.
64 Warsaw intellectuals draw up an appeal calling on the government to recognise the MKS and start talks with workers.
From an MKS statement:
The first point on the list of our demands is of key significance. Without independent trade unions, all the other demands can be crossed out in the future. This is what happened more than once in the short history of the Polish People’s Republic. The official trade unions not only failed to defend our rights and interests and still refrain from defending them, but are even more hostile towards a justified strike action than party and government circles.
From the „Intellectuals’ Appeal”:
All of us - the ruled and the rulers - must be motivated by the weal of Poland. In the present situation one should refrain from instigating and dividing society using unconsidered words and abusive assessments. We witnessed enough slandering campaigns of hate during our times. Let us all learn to respect each other’s dignity.
From a protocol from a meeting of the Political Bureau of the Polish United Workers’ Party Central Committee:
Comrade General Wojciech Jaruzelski:
One should be sensitive to things Soviet, to safeguard them. Our friends are highly disquieted by what is taking place in our country.
Comrade Edward Gierek:
We can observe an unprecedented psychosis of helplessness and fear, caused by enemy pressure. There is something in society and in the party, something that has been growing for years. A confidence crisis is omnipresent… [...] I can begin talks with workers at any time.
