If you want a stiff to speak, then he should do this only in order to promise and to assure. A stiff is interested solely in one thing - how much he is going to earn. When he leaves the factory, his pockets are full of screws, lines and cables. Were it not for the management, stiffs would steal the whole factory. Then they stand in front of inns, drinking beer. Then they sleep. In the morning, on a commuter train, they play cards. Once they arrive in the factory, they start to queue in front of the doctor’s surgery to get a sick leave. Meanwhile, on the Coast, and then elsewhere in the country, behind that mist of satisfied self appeasement one could see the young face of a new generation of workers - thinking, intelligent, aware of their position in society, and - most importantly - determined to draw all consequences from the fact that, in tune with the ideological assumptions of the system, their class is accorded the leading role in society. As far as I can remember, this belief, this sureness and unshaken will emerged for the first time with such strength during those August days. A river that changes the landscape and the climate of a country began to flow across our land.
