March 1981

  • 24 March - „Solidarity” decides to launch a nationwide pre-emptive strike on 27 march, and - in case the circumstances of the beatings of union activists are not clarified - a general strike starting from 31 March.
  • 27 March - A four-hour pre-emptive strike is held all over the country which becomes evidence of immense preparedness of the movement.

Bronisław Geremek („Solidarity” adviser):

We must respond with a blow. But a general strike without a fixed date of its termination is actually tantamount to a national uprising. We should be conscious of what decision we want to make. Therefore I advise to launch a pre-emptive strike and then - if this does not help - a general strike but with the date of its termination set beforehand.

Tadeusz Mazowiecki („Solidarity” adviser):

We must remember that general Jaruzelski’s government is the last card permitting to resolve problems in a peaceful way. And even if this card is weak, one should use it. Which means - only a few hours’ strike at the end of the week. Such a strike will shake the political setup in this country and may change what we want changed.
