September 1981

  • 16 September - A strongly-worded statement by the PUWP CC Political Bureau against „Solidarity”. Secret preparations for introduction of martial law near an end.
  • 18 September - Moscow demands a curb on anti-Soviet propaganda pursued by “Solidarity”.

PUWP CC Political Bureau:

The country’s political situation is developing in a dangerous direction. The condition of the economy continues to decline and living conditions become increasingly difficult. […]

Our party, the authorities of People’s Poland warned „Solidarity” on many occasions against elements of destruction and anarchy existing in its ranks and in its activity. […]

Taming political madmen is in the interest of the nation and independent Poland. […]

We will defend socialism the way one defends Poland’s independence. In this defence, the state will use means adequate for the situation.

Statement by the CPSU CC and the government of the USSR:

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union is forced to draw the attention of the Central Committee of the Polish United Worker’s Party and the government of the Polish People’s Republic to anti-Soviet attitudes intensifying in Poland to an extent reaching dangerous limits. […]

Anti-socialist forces in Poland strive to create an atmosphere of extreme nationalism with a clearly anti-Soviet character. What is more, the current anti-Soviet campaign in Poland, with its scale, intensiveness and hostility levels starts to resemble anti-Soviet hysteria fanned in some imperialist countries.
